Mohamed El Maouloud Ag Hamid learned the art of silversmithing from his father, who learned it from his father, first through watching him and his uncles and later through activly participating in more and more important steps of the jewellery making process.┬áIn 1997 he founded the Association Timidwa (Timidwa means ‘friendship’ in Tamachek, the language of the Tuareg people) to help other artisans and the community and to maintain the Tuareg traditions. It is comprised of 70 artisans of Mali’s various ethnic groups. The 30 women of the association predominantly work with leather while the men are silversmiths.
