Free Lectures hosted by NADFAS
These lectures aim to provide an insight into the thoughts, processes and inspiration which lay behind the creation of a work of art. This year Art in Action have invited NADFAS (National Association of Decorative & Fine Art Societies) to host the lectures. NADFAS are a worldwide organisation with a long and distinguished history of supporting the development of the fine arts, particularly in the fields of education and the preservation of artistic heritage.
Thursday: Anton Gabszewicz on Ceramics
11.00am Two London Porcelain Factories, Chelsea and Bow: A Study in Contrasts
2.00pm 18th Century English Porcelain: Contexts and Chronology
Anton Gabszewicz is a former director and head of European Ceramics at Christie’s, London, as well as organiser of its Education Course. An international specialist in English and European ceramics for over 30 years, he appeared on the first BBC Antiques Roadshow and broadcast with them for over 10 years. He is an internationally respected writer and lecturer on English porcelain, Bow in particular.
Friday: Andy McConnell on Glass

2.00pm 20th Century Glass
Andy McConnell has dealt in antiques since adolescence, but spent time in journalism, music, film and television before ‘returning’ with the publication of his acclaimed tome The Decanter, An Illustrated History of Glass from 1650. Also the author of Miller’s 20th Century Glass, he writes regularly, has appeared on the 20th Century Roadshow, and has just started his fourth series for The Antiques Roadshow. He runs Britain’s largest antique and vintage.

2.00pm Windsor Castle:Its History and Occupants 1080 – 2002
Oliver Everett, whose distinguished career includes the Foreign Office, being assistant private secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales; private secretary to Diana, Princess of Wales; Librarian, Royal Library, Windsor Castle, now Librarian Emeritus following his retirement. He is also writer of the official guidebook on Windsor Castle and articles on the Royal Library.
Sunday: Janusz Karczewski-Slowikowski on Furniture
11.00am The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale
2.00pm Victorian Furniture – Why Victoria was not amused!
Janusz Karczewski-Slowikowski, a NADFAS member since 1982, is an antique dealer and freelance lecturer in English furniture history. He has lectured for over 30 years throughout Britain, Europe and Australia, giving particular consideration to the aesthetic, craft and socio-economic aspects of fine furniture.
