Truth and Beauty; Some threads in Western Art – Carol Hartley

“TRUTH AND BEAUTY; SOME THREADS IN WESTERN ART.”

What is beauty?

Why do some paintings, sculptures and buildings remain beautiful to us over centuries?

Is there a common factor which we, knowingly or not, can recognize?

Does such work express a beauty which does not change and which we could call Truth?

These are some of the threads picked up, explored and illustrated in this talk, which also seeks to open our eyes to the beauty of the present moment.

Carol Hartley is a practising artist, working mainly in watercolour and pastel and specialising in botanical illustration.

Her most recent work has been a series of paintings shown at the Royal Horticultural Society as well as various portrait commissions.
